The most powerful thing you can do is to take that first step because on the backside is your potential. It's OK to be scared. I'm scared all the time. I'm scared about this book I'm about to release, the idea that I may never experience love, that I'm not capable of reaching my full potential, and that I'm a bad friend,brother, partner, and man. Het vraagt moed en kwetsbaarheid om eerlijk met de buitenwereld te delen dat je je bijvoorbeeld verdrietig, boos, eenzaam, uitgeput of depressief voelt. Ik weet nu uit eigen ervaringen, na jarenlang overleven vanachter mijn glimlach masker, dat het ontzettend bevrijdend voelt om eerlijk te kunnen delen hoe het werkelijk met mij gaat. Geen toneelspel meer, geen leugens meer, geen perfect plaatje meer om aan te moeten voldoen. Ik mag mezelf zijn met al mijn emoties en gevoelens. En juist door mijn kwetsbaarheid te laten zien en mijn pijn en verdriet te delen met de ander, voel ik me nu veel meer verbonden met de mensen in mijn omgeving. Ik geef ze nu de mogelijkheid om me te troosten en er voor me te zijn. Brené Brown zegt terecht ‘hoe kan er van je gehouden worden als je jezelf niet laat zien’? En dat is precies wat ik jou ook gun. “No matter how far down the scale you have gone you will see how your experience will benefit others” If you are like me, you have hidden some of your deepest darkest things, burying them in shame. You believe that that keeping them hidden will free you from the pain and judgement that may come if anyone ever knew the truth. The problem is, it always catches up to you. Sometimes it will destroy your relationships. Sometimes you pass that disfunction and perceived perfectionism down generationally. Sometimes it will keep you from reaching your greatest potential in your calling or career. Sometimes it will take your health down with it. Sometimes all of the above. I know how hard this is. The very thing you believe disqualifies you from living the life of your dreams is actually the very thing that qualifies you. I saw another ripple effect of that this weekend. 7 years ago when i decided to change it all, i had 2 kids watching my every move. They saw Grace, Humility, Courage, and Service. When we share our stories of overcoming and healing, it gives others persmission to. It breaks down walls that have been up for centuries. It also builds a level of trust, credibility, relatability and compassion so you can effectively help others. As i entered the gates of the very community that helped me help my kids, I felt healing. I was told over and over the impact my son has had on their lives. By kids he has served, peers he has encouraged and mentors he has inspired. Just when i felt my heart couldn’t fill anymore, the overflow came as a young girl came up and told me that Joey has shared several times in his own testimony that the reason he is the man he is- is because of the example in which i live my life and his mission is to pay that forward. it is moments like this I think about how different things are for so many had i continued to hide underneath the rubble. I know you may feel that your lowest of lows could never be a gift to you, let alone anyone else. There are people out there that need to know they aren’t alone in it. Walk out of that prison you have put yourself in. Not only will you help others set themselves free, you will be too.

How does our clinically tested Trauma Protocol work? Very similarly to EMDR but with better and more consistent results, according to preliminary field studies. . . Dr Arielle Swartz’ description of traumatic memories’ effect on the brain is this: “In order to better understand this process, we turn our attention to the way that memories are stored in the brain as a form of neural networks. A neural network is a group of interconnected brain cells (neurons) that fire together. Traumatic memories are maintained as maladaptive neural networks that result in a limited ability to adapt, process, and resolve traumatic stress. You can think of this like a record that has a scratch in it. The needle will skip on that spot repeatedly unless we intervene. (If you were born after record players went out of use, you can think of a CD that keeps getting stuck in the same spot).” . . One significant difference between our protocol and EMDR is a process we employ that’s called “memory reconsolidation”. In this manner and based on current neuroscience, the maladaptive neural networks are able to re-integrate using new information that’s imprinted along with the trauma memory and stored together in long-term memory. The very next time you recall that memory, it will have far less impact and be less intense. Distressing thoughts and emotions are blended with new positive thoughts and emotions and when combined with my slow somatic practices, embodied awareness allows frozen sensations in the body to resolve through healing movements. . Having a traumatic event alters your brain so much so that you can literally become a different person! However; there is hope! Most popular talking therapy may not always be the most helpful for trauma survivors. We know intellectually that not all of our beliefs are rational and because of that retraining our hard wiring can be intense! We also know that our physical responses are out of proportion to the situation. The real issue is that our irrational beliefs and physical responses often aren't coming from our rational brain – due to the traumatic event! But generations of low emotional intelligence and spiritual disconnect have cast a society that is inept at accepting and processing our inner responses to pain. 😶 :: Women especially fall into a stagnancy that blocks the flow of energy and buries the emotion deep in the body. The trauma has its own vibration and that vibe becomes woven into the fabric of our bodies. It affects everything. Our muscles and joints, our skin, our heart and other organs, literally every cell in our body. These stagnancies will never go away unless they are intentionally released. It's easy to get lost In the shuffle, especially when you are in a state of being disassociated which for many is a normal mode as a survivor of child abuse. Being disassociated is a mechanism that our bodies and brain deploy to help us cope with traumatic experiences. One of the issues with being disassociated is that you may feel like you’re in a fog or just slowly watching yourself exist from the outside. It’s the little practices that we can do like walking down the street without headphones on or really tasting the food that we put into our mouths I can help us become associated over time. What's the award winning story you tell yourself and others? The story you're so convinced its true that you not only believe it wholeheartedly but others believe it too. That story you know off by heart and can find a way to use it in almost every way to stop yourself from living your best life.. you can use any other story you like and it would be just as convincing. It's true. Keep your award winning story but just as an experiment try on another story that empowers you. That gives you every chance at the life you so badly want. The story that says anything is possible because it is. Tell this new believable story to others like you do the other one. Convince others and yourself of this very truth. Try doing this for no less than 30 days Why 30... well scientifically our brains need a month to turn a new habit and train of thought to stick. But also if you only give it a week it's just not enough time. There he was, as he always is when my heart expands. The morning was overcast with no visibility, but I knew the summit would be luminous above the clouds. The drive to the trailhead was hazy, my soul suffused with weeks of triumphant travel and freedom, feet itching to climb, mind prepping to conquer a mountain. Grass Mountain is a notoriously strenuous hike in a notoriously gorgeous part of California. It's a near 2500 ft. elevation gain, most of it a steep, vertical climb in the last mile in full exposure. I love hikes like this, where my entirety heals with the demands of a physical challenge, surrounded by exquisite and curative nature, summiting to stand on giants where incomparable perspective is awarded. Passing through the valley, crossing the creek, and making my way through dense and dazzling growth, the final ascent approached. The clouds were loosening, pockets of clarity + sun peaking through stunning scenes of wild + inspiring nature. The dogs + I paused underneath a large tree offering shade + respite. As if a hand waved in front of the mountain, the cloud-covered peak cleared. Staring at the sparkling beauty before me, all became quiet. And then the voice of my late husband, Matt, punctured the silence + said, ‘I'm so proud of you.’ Knees weakened. Eyes glistened. I hadn’t been intentionally thinking of him. He is indeed eternally with me, but my thoughts had emptied to behold + be still with the sight + task before me. But there he was, as he always is when my heart expands. And we spoke, exchanging sentiments of love + longing. Then he urged me to finish the work at hand, assuring me with confidence + adoration. Fueled with magic, unconditional love, and encouragement the ascent became an exultant march to the peak, each step galvanized with the infinite power of spirit. Victoriously standing above the clouds, I reflected on the upcoming anniversary of his passing. Resolving how time is relative yet absolute. How we are never alone. How true love has no boundaries. Today, the 3 year anniversary of Matt's return to spirit, my heart swells to every mountain I have ever climbed, where we rise to meet each other again + always.

Healing from trauma is possible despite what you may have heard. The key is knowing how to heal yourself. One of the most important aspects in the healing process is dismantling the negative beliefs that you have about yourself. These beliefs are supported by a strong circuitry in your brain. Healing from trauma must deal with this circuitry in order for you to experience the shifts that you are seeking. Dr. Heller is my trauma teacher. I really appreciated hearing this from him yesterday. * He was talking about how for children it’s usually safer to direct anger at themselves than at their caregivers. And then as adults, we might keep that pattern going, shaming ourselves instead of allowing ourselves to feel anger that is justified for something that happened. * Once we learn to own our anger, to really allow ourselves to feel its power Without trying to dampen it, then we no longer need to shame ourselves/turn the anger against ourselves. * It’s not about turning the anger against others either. It’s simply about learning to Be with it, to feel and make space for the incredible power of the feeling. * The feeling is just energy that we need to learn to contain. And that takes practice and time. * We can grow our nervous system’s capacity to do that- over time. And it is truly life-changing. * This is one aspect of how I support my clients. Having those things you do everyday to help keep you grounded is important. You and I both know treating trauma can be sometimes like being in a windstorm...at any moment threaten to be blown away by the hard moments of our clients. Don’t forget you are the greatest tool you have to impact the lives of your clients. No modality can replace the attunement of another human. It’s important to understand that there truly isn’t anything wrong with you. • • You see, you’ve told yourself a story about yourself based on the negative messages that you received as a child, as well as any negative experiences that you may have encountered. • • I refer to the above as perceptually-based trauma...because these messages, experiences, and the stories that we tell ourselves about ourselves following these experiences, lead to very fixed ideas that we hold about ourselves...core limiting beliefs. • • And it’s these beliefs that bring about negative and often times, abusive thoughts that we think about ourselves. • • If you’ve ever listened to your negative self talk, it is probably some of the worst stuff you may have heard about yourself. • • It’s also these beliefs that create and maintain the synaptic connections in our brains. • • Once you begin the healing process, you begin to dismantle the synaptic connections and heal this perceptually-based trauma...and this entire process will allow you to see yourself for who you truly are. • An amazing and beautiful being of love. • • • Need help with this process?? Warning ⚠️ You’re going to hate me a little for this post. I see you going on about your day. Getting everything done. You high achiever you. I see that you seem well put together and are checking off all the boxes. I see you making sure everyone is taken care of. AND know that I see you. See I know what depression looks like and I know what it FEELS LIKE. I know what anxiety FEELS like. I have felt the desire to end it all and I know what it feels like to not feel at all. To be NUMB. I know what it feels like to not have good memories to go back to. To feel like you are. Stuck in a life that we’re thrown into I know what it feels like to shove down the past so deep that you want to vomit to even think of going back there. Sometimes we shove it so far down we forget there’s a reason we’re so fucking irritable sometimes. We don’t want to be touched or even looked at. We forget that there was that incident at uncle Joes house that felt eerie. There’s a reason you’re sooo good at acting like you’re okay to please everyone else. A reason you became hyper sexual in highschool. Or why you just don’t experience the pleasure at the level others express that comes from intimacy Shoving your trauma down and pretending it never happened can only get you so far before you realize ten more years have gone by and you still don’t understand why your life hasn’t changed much. Your kids are older and seem like there’s been some projection into them and they are having a bit of a hard time and now you recognize it cause it’s like looking in a mirror. I see you. AND I FEEL YOU. Being someone who has done so much work for my healing. Being empathic and having intuitive abilities helps me to see and feel a soul plead almost instantaneously. This is why I am a shadow integration and trauma coach. Because I know what it’s like to be numb, stuck, scared. Bored and just fucking confused. I know it takes bravery to re-visit these memories we work so hard to keep bottled up and put away. I know it requires a safe space and having others around that you trust. This has been on my mind all weekend and with each one of my clients! Unfortunately, our trauma wants to stay hidden. Forcing us up hide behind what we’ve been through! You OWE it to yourself to heal and deal! Sure, it’s painful but not more painful than suffering in silence! • • • To be honest, we ALL are triggered by something. Whether we discern those triggers is another thing. Those triggers are directly related to broken areas in your life. It’s important to 1. Identify the triggers 2. Get to the root of them and 3. Take actionable steps to seek help and unpack your triggers! You can do it!
A lot has happened in the 7 years you’ve been gone. There have been heartbreaks and heartwins. There have been setbacks and there have been comebacks. You welcomed your brother home with you and now i have the two most influential men of my life looking over me. 💚 I learned a lot about myself during the last 7 years. A lesson I’m not sure would have been as pivotal without the sudden loss of you. I went from coping in the most unhealthy of ways creating a lot more pain, to feeling everything and moving with grace Thru the grief. It took me the majority of my life to meet peace and joy without illusion, facade, and pretense. Decades of chronic stress and hardships under the merciless weight of darkness and depression finally evolved into health and happiness when I least expected it, in the company of cancer, death, and grief. My past remains the same, events and traumas unaltered, but looking back at my history through the lens of my unyielding loyalty to the contentment and harmony I’ve now created for myself, they are indeed changed. Standing firmly in the present with reverence instead of resentment or provocation for what was and all that’s past demands absolute devotion to the now, this moment, and gratitude for the lifelong lessons that taught me how to be well. My new normal journey is truly a roller-coaster ride. It isn't a destination, rather it is a process that involves successes and failures. I refuse to let the setbacks crush me so with every stumble, I get back up again. In recent times, I've had more physical pain than usual because I let some things slide due to exhaustion. This then became a vicious cycle that resulted in more fatigue. As self-pity and regret aren't allies of mine, my great pal dogged determination came to the rescue. A chronic condition is any physical or mental health condition that lasts more than one year, recurs frequently, or requires ongoing treatment. Some common chronic conditions are depression, anxiety, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, IBD, IBS, GERD, PCOS, hypo and hyperthyroidism, insomnia, asthma, diabetes, obesity, cancer, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, Alzheimer's and dementia. More than half of Americans have at least one chronic condition. Women are more likely to have multiple chronic conditions. Depression does not always accompany somber faces, fatigue, and loneliness. Sometimes depression is masked by charm, humor, and the desire for companionship. A difficult childhood wrought with trauma and hardships cultivated a deep depression in me that lasted decades. Survival in those conditions meant I had to build an exterior armor to hide my pain. I disguised my suffering behind wit, humor, and charisma. It was exhausting. Not everyone who is depressed acts depressed. In fact, many don't. Mental health conditions affect at least half the people in this country. Don't assume that just because someone acts happy that they are. Always engage your family and friends. Don't shy away from seemingly awkward questions and conversations. Part of the exhaustion and pain of hiding mental health issues is the draining experience of feeling unseen and invisible. Our societal relationship with mental health only changes on a small scale first. With the individual. With the family. Talk to your family and friends about more than what is on the surface. For you never know what is underneath someone's armor. The human condition is a shared one.
